If you decide to begin a senior care franchise, you’ll likely have a lot of guidance provided to you. But, if you open a senior care business independently you need to know the right steps to take in order to get through the process and find success.

1. Register the business name – if you’re joining a part of a franchise then you won’t need to register a business name. But, if you’re an independent business this will allow you to take out loans and financial accounts under your business name, and ensure no one else uses it!

2. Get the appropriate business license – depending upon what’s required in your state, you will need to obtain the right licensing to allow you to operate

3. Get a tax account – in order to bill the necessary taxes, a tax account must be registered with the government. It’s best to do this after the business name has been obtained

4. Setup an office – decide how you’re going to operate. If you intend to setup a formal office space where clients can visit; lease a space. Otherwise, make sure you have a workplace out of a home office to deal with the logistics of running a business

5. Hire – you can’t do it all alone in the home care business, so start hiring professionals. Be selective and don’t be afraid to scrutinize all applicants. Start early so you have plenty of time!

6. Advertise – get the word out that your business is in operation by planning local events for your target demographic, setup your business on social networks and use other effective methods to recruit clientele!

The baby boom population has created a new dynamic in the marketplace: The competition for senior living care. The existing senior care facilities are ramping up their marketing a notch, particularly with the new Segovia Áegis Senior Living resort-styled community set to open in Palm Desert in May and a report that the national franchises, see revenue swell more than 225 percent in 2009.

An open house last week at a mid-valley senior community highlighted that theme.

Mission Hills Senior Living at Rancho Mirage, 34-560 Bob Hope Drive, held a grand reopening under a new name and new management — Integrated Senior Living — that kicked off a raffle through May 5 for three Assisted Living apartments for as little as $250 per month over for 12 months.

The value of the drawing was reported to be $30,000.

Normal rent for the apartments start at $2,800 per month in Mission Hills, an assisted living and memory care community with 124 units.

Often businesses start small, and the founders don’t even picture their growth because they’re satisfied with what they do. That is particularly true with those who begin senior care businesses not because of the potential for business success, but because they have a drive to improve the lives of older adults in their community.

Just because business growth might not be an immediate dream doesn’t mean it can’t or shouldn’t be taken to the next level. Senior care business owners, whether they’re independent or part of a franchise can grow their businesses. It doesn’t have to be just for the prospect of a more secure financial future for themselves; but by providing an increased service, they can ensure more seniors are touched by the benefits of home care services.

Those who go with a senior care franchise to start their business already have the support they need to grow their business, because a franchisor ultimately hopes that each individual branch will help grow the brand in name and reputation. Those who are independent can continue on their own steam, or obtain help from industry-related consultants when they’re ready to move to the next level with their business and aren’t sure how to proceed.

Business owners never need to limit themselves, and when they’re in an industry with the opportunity to change the lives of others; there’s no reason why the sky should be the limit!

The increasing number of baby boomers means that in the upcoming years there will be a greater need than ever for all varieties of services to help seniors. This can include traditional medical care as well as senior care franchises that provide medical and non-medical care alike.

As baby boomers enter their senior years and retirement, there will be a greater number of seniors than the United States has ever seen before, and many of them will want to take advantage of the services that are available today that allow them increased independence. Not only will many families be choosing home care over traditional senior care methods, it will also become more necessary as the medical system may not be able to manage the large number of seniors requiring assistance.

So, for those who have been considering investing in a senior care franchise, there’s no greater motivation to help prove it’s the right time than a mounting senior population who could benefit greatly!

Even if your business plan may change over time, in order to make it a professional document geared towards guiding your business towards its goals, there are certain components that it should have. While a franchise owner might change their business plan over time, and while some elements might be dictated by the franchisor; a comprehensive document means that it’s a business plan that can go to other essential people that are part of the business.

1. Sections to include – executive summary, business overview, management team, sales and marketing, competitive analysis, and financial plan

2. Goals and market – a realistic goal for the future or even in the more immediate future can be set, and it’s essential to define the target audience. For example, if you run a senior care franchise then your market might be older adults aged 65 and older.

3. Competitive analysis – define how you will plan to make your business different from others in the industry. Think about what will make clients come to you over your competition

4. Contact information – this information needs to be included on the cover page and at the end of the document

5. Table of contents – ensure a table of contents outlines all sections

6. Be clear – ensure that all points are explained clearly. Be concise and remove repetitive information

7. Be accurate – ensure that all of the information is accurate that you include in your business plan. While you may have to estimate some details, make it based on real data

8. Be conservative – make sure that any financial estimates are conservative; don’t go too overboard or make estimates too low, otherwise you’ll run into trouble

9. Proofread – spelling and grammar should be reviewed

Once a business plan has been developed, it’s not the written rule. A good entrepreneur running a franchise follows the standards set by the franchisor but also learns how to be adaptable. Having business savvy is necessary for success, because sometimes like in life; in business, you need to take things as they come and learn how to make the best out of any situation.

A mistake that many business owners in all industries make is that they set goals, and then months or years down the road, continue to abide by them strictly or just don’t know how to adapt to the necessary changes. Let’s face it, plans you made years ago might no longer make sense for your business. For example, re-evaluate your marketing plan – direct mailings by letter mail use to be the norm, now online marketing has taken the world by storm with a focus upon social networking. In this case, continuing to use direct mailing would not make sense or be beneficial to the business.

Change, adapt, rely on your mind and your intuition and you’ll get your business where it needs to be.

If you’ve been following, we previously filled you in on the importance of drafting up a business plan; but also that it isn’t something that needs to be considered written rule, you can adapt and change it as your business and ideas grow.

If you don’t have a business plan at all, you can probably expect to kiss your success goodbye, even if your business is a smaller-scale franchise that’s in the early stages. There are a number of things that can throw you off achieving your goals without a business plan:

1.	If you don’t have clear goals for today and tomorrow, how can you expect to achieve them?

2.	To achieve goals, it’s necessary to understand what resources might be needed even if the goal is years down the road. So set clear goals, and establish what you need to get there and take the necessary steps when you’re ready

3.	Staff might be busy, but is what they’re accomplishing heading in the right direction?

4.	Always having goals to achieve, whether big or small makes sure there is always forward progress. Without something new to achieve, senior care franchise owners and their team may become more complacent

5.	Even if you are working towards a goal, having a plan clearly set can help business owners to review their strategy

The benefits of a business plan can go farther than the simple elements outlined above, but simply putting pen to paper is a great start for all new business owners, and as their business savvy increases with the growth of their company things like product lifecycle, a clearly defined portfolio of services (that extends beyond marketing materials) and much more can be added.

In some cases with a franchise purchase in the senior care industry, many of these aspects are specifically outlined by the franchisor based on the standards of the company. So, from this perspective, it’s also important that franchisees focus only on the elements of their business plan which they can shape and control.

There’s a misconception about business plans; business owners often think that once they’ve put their future goals and plans for the business in writing that they’re legally obliged to follow suit. A business plan is not meant to be inflexible, it doesn’t need to be abided by to the letter of the law, but having one can really help franchise owners to keep their businesses heading in the right direction and ensure that they don’t lose sight of their goals.

In the senior care industry, a business plan is essential. When you start a business, you’re likely looking into the future and establishing plans about expansion, community outreach and more. But, once you’re engaged in the business you might be overwhelmed and feel like you need to stay afloat. Or you may feel like you’re making a contribution to the senior population, so you don’t need to go any further. Having a business plan reminds you of where you wanted to be. If certain aspects outlined are no longer realistic in your business structure, then it’s okay to adapt or change them.

But consider a business plan a promise to yourself early on about what you’d like your franchise to become.

While a franchise may come with a predetermined structure, which is one of the benefits that many prospective franchise investors look for; not everything is written in stone. If you’re interested in a specific franchise, but don’t like all the terms, work with a legal professional and negotiate the contract. You may find that the franchisor is willing to budge on some of their terms. It is likely, however, that franchisors will be more cooperative in negotiating some points versus others and these may include the following:

1. The franchise fee – two things the franchisees must pay is an initial franchise fee plus a royalty percentage to the franchisor. It’s unusual that a franchisor will budge on the royalty charge, but they may negotiate the purchase fee

2. When the franchise opens – the franchise contract may come with an opening date, but a franchisee can always ask to change this before signing to better accommodate their schedule or personal goals for the business

3. The location of the franchise – when signing a franchise contract, a franchisor might have a very specific location in mind whether it’s an existing franchise or not. Franchisees might consider a different location based on where they live, or where they recognize a demand for the business

You might have dreams of getting into the franchise business, but having that aspiration doesn’t mean that you’re the right person for the job. Franchisors won’t take just anyone with a dream and a smile – they want people that will properly represent the brand and do them proud. Oh, and then there’s that whole money issue as well.

So, if you’re dreaming of a senior care franchise in your future to give back to the elderly population in your community, you’d better consider whether or not you fit the bill from the perspective of a franchisor. Here are a few things that they look for:

1. Money, money, money – a franchisor provides support to a franchisee, but that doesn’t mean that they foot the financial bill as well. Prospective franchisees must have the money for the initial start-up fee, and also enough in reserve for contingency

2. Good support of the brand – franchises are successful because they’re part of a known brand. Along with this, franchisees can make lower risk investments in getting involved with successful businesses. But, franchisees do need to be willing to follow the system that’s set in place and not rewrite the rules

3. Driven – a franchisor can help guide a franchisee, but they’re not there for handholding. A franchisee needs to run with the guidelines provided by the franchisor and make every effort to make the business a success

While at the end of the day, it might be your reputation and your financial investment that’s on the line, franchisors want to see all of their businesses succeed.

As you begin to grow your senior care franchise, ensure that the franchisor continues to play the role that was agreed upon in your contact to help set you up for success, that way you can reach out to the community that you desire to help. Here are a few things that you can expect from a franchisor to set you on the right path.

1. Ongoing communication – a great franchisor should remain in regular communication with you about how the business is growing on the whole. They can share stories of success and failure for you to learn from as a new franchisor, and provide you general industry trends that will help you make successful business decisions.

2. Support – as you setup your business, you shouldn’t have to be on your own when it comes to learning the ropes of marketing and financial management. A franchisor can provide this guidance either by way of documentation, a training program or access to individuals involved with the company that can provide this advice

3. Monitoring – remember, as a franchisor they want success as much as you do, because it’s their brand and reputation on the line if your franchise doesn’t do well. Expect them to monitor your business and practices and to receive feedback (positive or negative) on following their guidelines

While of course, the areas of your concern are of utmost importance to any home care provider, it is also their job to help make sure that your loved ones are comfortable and safe day after day.

Home care providers really do care for the well-being of the seniors that they’re with day after day, and they get that in the winter months, it can be even more trying for seniors. The weather can make getting around challenging, the temperature makes it less comfortable and bills sky rocket.

Home care professionals can help to ensure that seniors are comfortable in their homes and safe from the elements to the best of their abilities. Suggestions can be made to improve energy-efficiency, senior care providers can assist with basic home maintenance, and even run errands for or with seniors who worry about venturing out into the winter weather.

Of course, senior care franchises can help provide comfort for the elderly year-round; but particularly during a winter that has seen more cold weather and unusual stormy conditions it’s a time that families often have the greatest concerns.

Regardless of the type of franchise that you’re looking to buy, there are certain things that you need to know before you enter into the investment decision. If you’re considering a senior care franchise, you’ve likely got your eye on the end result – the opportunity to help improve the life and health of older adults. However, considering this might be one of the biggest investments of your life, you’ve got to enter the deal with eyes wide open and be prepared to seek professional help.

1. Understand the contracts typically involved – with most franchise purchases, investors will receive a Franchise Disclosure Document which is approximately 180 pages. It should include all relevant information about the franchise system and the appropriate documents. There will be information about the franchisor’s credit history/history of bankruptcy, and the fees that the franchisor will cover during start-up and later.

2. Have a professional read the contracts – the Franchise Disclosure Document should be reviewed by a lawyer or advisor before any commitment is made to make sure all elements are fully understood and that it will be a healthy and mutual beneficial relationship for the franchisor and the franchisee

3. Don’t be afraid to negotiate – once the Franchise Disclosure Document has been reviewed and it’s been decided that it’s an opportunity to be pursued, there’s always room for negotiations and a lawyer should lead these to make sure you get what you want out of the deal

Once you’ve gone through this process, and you’re feeling confident, then your franchise investment is one to go through with. From there, it will still be a long road but you can start focusing on improving the lives of older adults in addition to the business elements that will keep you stay afloat!

For older adults, winter can be one of the most trying times and that’s for a number of reasons. Costs can sky-rocket due to increased heating bills and put a strain on those who already find themselves on a fixed and limited income. It can also reduce their physical comfort level due to the changing temperatures and weather.

Home care franchises can help seniors to identify areas in their lives and homes that they could improve in order to improve their financial and physical comfort during the winter months, especially one as sporadic and unusual as we’ve seen this season.

1. Suggest budgeted utility bills – seniors and their families can look into whether or not their local utility companies for gas, water and electricity offer budgeted plans so that bills are consistent throughout the year

2. Consult the Weather Assistance Program – The Weather Assistance Program helps many lower income individuals address low cost ways to improve the energy-efficiency of their home and this is a suggestion caregivers can make

3. Safety – in addition to addressing cost reduction and general comfort, home care providers can improve safety by ensuring that seniors are not taking shortcuts. The stove should never be used instead of a furnace for heat, and flashlights should be on hand to provide lighting rather than candles

However, one thing that they need to consider is that it’s easy for that all to change in an unexpected emergency. It doesn’t have to be a medical situation or a personal accident – it can be a natural disaster. Following some recent events worldwide, like the earthquake in Haiti, we have all been reminded that everything really can change in a second and that many things in life are out of control. Home care providers can help seniors prepare for these occurrences and ensure that they are safe and prepared.

You might think that your elderly loved one is safe at home today, but how would they cope if there were an earthquake, tornado or fire? There are a number of factors that can put even relatively healthy seniors at a greater risk and with home help, their chances of survival can greatly increase.

1. Perception and senses change – with age, seniors may find that their reaction times are delayed, which might make it more challenging for them to know how to respond quickly in the wake of a natural disaster. Changes in senses like hearing and vision can also put them at a greater risk

2. Mobility difficulties – seniors might have the physical abilities to get around their home, but when their environment changes due to natural disaster they just might not be able to avoid danger

3. Emergency planning – families just don’t always expect to plan for natural disasters; emergency plans for seniors might surround health issues and accidents. Caregivers can help ensure that this is also a focus so that a plan is set in place to help seniors get through the circumstances that they’re faced with
