Tips on the Hiring Process

In any franchise business, you will end up with a wide mix of staff with different personalities. At the end of the day, individuals of varying personalities might be able to get the job done, but each person will have their own strengths and weaknesses; and with that in mind, you have to make sure that you have a diverse mix.

While specific skill may not be apparent during the interview process, personalities will be, and this is a crucial part in determining which people apply to work at your franchise will be asked to join the business. Here are 4 main personality types and their characteristics which you will be able to identify and evaluate when interviewing potential candidates for each position in your company that can help you to ensure you put the right person in the job that they’re best suited for and ensure that they’ll be a great benefit to the franchise.

Outgoing & Extroverted Personality Type

• Positive attitude

• Talkative, chatty and cheerful

• Not always detail oriented

• Shorter attention span and often easily distracted from a task at hand

• Needs attention and regular reassurance that they’re doing a good job

• Superficial thinker

• Prefers to avoid external conflict

When interviewing a person with this personality type, try and evaluate their listening skills and the quality of their responses to each of these questions. It’s also a good idea to give them a hypothetical situation to see how they would handle a difficult client at the franchise; if their answer relates to avoidance of the situation, you will need to consider if they are the right person for the job.

Hiring Senior Caregivers for Home Care

Without a core staff to keep your senior care franchise business in operation, you’ve got nothing. If your staff, particularly those who are delivering the service directly to the client aren’t proficient at their jobs with consideration to training, skills and personality, you might as well wish your profits goodbye before you’ve ever come close to breaking even. Of course, even having a diligent hiring process won’t give you a 100% guarantee that every senior care provider will have a long and successful run with your franchise, but it will put your business on the right track!

The top things you need to evaluate when hiring a senior home caregiver to work with your franchise include the following:

1. Licensing, certifications – the required designations of your staff will depend upon the type of senior home care business you are intending on operating. If it’s a non-medical home care business, you might strictly need to ensure that your senior caregivers have first aid certification of training either before they’re hired, or recognize their capacity to learn if you’ll put them through the training once they join the company

2. Experience – not all home caregivers need to have specific experience, although some exposure to older adults is a must. Depending on the level of involvement the caregivers you hire will have with the company will help to determine  the experience they need; but there is no hard and fast rule, it will be up to your discretion to determine the type of background you’d like each of your caregivers to have

3. Compatibility – the person you hire will need to get along well both with your senior clients and the other staff members involved with your franchise. You can look at personality to evaluate these aspects, but only on the job experience will help you ensure you made the right decision with each hire. Ensure that in any employment contract there is a trial period; you will need to pay them an agreed upon salary according to the contract, but can terminate their employment without fault if their employment doesn’t work out

Senior Care Franchise Investment

Before you make the decision to invest in a franchise of any kind you need to ask yourself two major questions  - Am I doing only because I believe this will be a profitable business? Am I doing this because I really feel like by starting a business of this type I can make a difference and create an opportunity to do something I love? There’s no right and wrong answer here, really, when considering making an investment in any franchise, a combination of both of those factors should come into play. Of course, you should want to turn a profit, because you don’t want to throw away your life savings on a business that’s not about to make you any money.

The question of choosing a franchise in an industry that allows you to do something you love is also a little bit more complex. Yes, you need to have a vested interest in the industry you plan to work, but depending on the franchise you’re considering you might not have the opportunity to make as direct as an impact as you might hope.

For example, in the senior care franchise industry, unless you plan on getting out there and working as a home caregiver yourself, you’re likely to have little one-on-one interaction with elderly clients. But that’s not to say that you won’t make a huge difference and feel the rewards of making a contribution to the elderly community; but just need to look objectively at what your role will be when you make your investment decision.

As a franchise owner, you’re likely to deal with the administrative and financial aspects of running the company – even if you have plans to get out there in the field and act as a senior caregiver yourself, that won’t happen from the beginning as you oversee and spearhead the project to get your business off the ground. Think about what you want to gain by purchasing your franchise, and move forward with your eyes wide open so from a personal and business perspective, you get what you paid for!

Be a Leader in Your Business, Part 2

Thank you for joining us in Part 2 of Being a Boss - Anyone can be a boss, but not everyone has it in them to be a real leader. As a franchise owner you need to try and develop your leadership skills and here are a few ways to make sure that you’re more than a boss, cont’d.

6. Keep strong and focused during times of conflict – crisis can happen, but you’ll get more respect as a leader if you are strong and efficient when a crisis occurs. Show your team you can step up to the plate and get them through even the most critical situation that could occur at your franchise

7. Make sure you’re seen as part of the time – while being the boss may give you some luxuries, don’t take advantage. You want to be a role model and have your staff feel like you’re a team player. Work even the more undesirable shifts, work weekends on occasion if you require it from your staff, and do even the dirty jobs that you require of others in the workplace!

8. Set an example – a highly-efficient boss will have a more efficient staff.  Make you sure you set the right example; if you expect your employees to be on time, make sure you do the same. This will also make sure they have more respect for you and your authority

9. Respect the skills of your employees – while you might find some of your team members are just there to go through the motions, many will have their own ideas of how to improve the success of your business. Allow your staff to excel in the areas that match their skills, and respect that although you’re the boss, everyone brings something different to the table!

10. Remember you don’t need to do it all – as the boss, you may feel like you may need to put more in than everyone else; while that may be true on some level, remember to take care of yourself and don’t take on too much. With an effective staff, you can ensure that your business runs just as well when you’re not there as when you are. That’s called effective leadership!

Being More Than a Boss: Leading a Franchise

Being More Than a Boss: Leading a Franchise (Part I)

Being a boss is one thing, but running a dictatorship of a franchise business isn’t going to ensure the success of your business or help your employees respect you and share your vision for the business. Anyone can be a boss, but not everyone has it in them to be a real leader. As a franchise owner you need to try and develop your leadership skills and here are a few ways to make sure that you’re more than a boss.

1. Share your vision – don’t just order your employees around, asking them to only focus on the small aspects of your business. In order to motivate them , share your vision for the future for the business and allow them to work towards the mutual goal

2. Be honest about issues – if you have concerns about the actions of your employees or about the performance of your franchise, talk about it and give the employees the chance to improve things. Some bosses don’t communicate with their staff members and simply fire them with things aren’t working out, but that doesn’t progress the business’ visions

3. Consider your employees part of a team – don’t try to control every move of your employees, look at yourself as the team leader, set the standards and make sure your employees understand your vision so they can work towards it in their own way. Remember, as long as the same goals are met, it doesn’t matter which methods each individual uses to get there

4. Reward your employees well – let’s face it, employees who feel as though they’re only earning enough to just survive, won’t want to go above or beyond because they will never feel like they’re being recognized for their efforts. Pay employees a decent salary, including benefits, and you’ll have employees that stick around for longer and work harder for you!

5. Accept feedback from your employees – make sure your employees know that you door is always open for them to voice their questions, concerns, or make suggestions about ways to improve the efficiency of the business. Always listen and keep your eyes open to new ideas!

Securing Clients for your Home Care Franchise

After you’ve got your home care franchise established, and have spread the word in order to recruit interested clientele into your business, you need to have a legal application process that will make sure you only provide services to suitable clients. It sounds strange to think that you’ll need to screen your applicants, but specific standards do need to be set, and remember, with the number of seniors and boomers approaching their elder years out there, you can afford to screen your clients!

1. Decide who you’re catering to – as a home care business, set the standards for clients who you will be working with. What will the age range be? Will you only work with seniors aged 65 and older, or will you provide services to younger adults who need similar assistance?

2. Set limitations on what your home care business will do – the services you provide will determine the type of clients you take. Will you strictly have a non-medical home care franchise? Or will you hire a registered nurse or doctor to be on staff to provide a range of other medical services as well?

3. Create a formal application – in order to determine your client’s eligibility for these services, have them fill out the relevant application. You can include approval for a credit check to ensure that any clients you intend to work with have enough financial stability

4. Have a lawyer establish a contract – it’s a good idea to have a contract that outlines the services that your staff will be responsible, fees, and any other details pertaining to liability and specific legal factors. Draft this up and have it reviewed by a lawyer.

As a new franchise owner, you might want to speed through the administrative and legal work to get your business up and running; but to secure the future success of your business, these are necessary aspects of development!

Effective Collections Strategy

When you start a home care business, you don’t necessarily want to think about the financial aspects – especially the collections process – but if you don’t have money coming in, you just don’t have a business so you need to establish an effective collections strategy. Depending upon the industry you’re in, you may need to adapt your collections strategy, but here are some basic guidelines that make sure that you receive the money that’s due to you from your franchise clients.

1. Complete credit checks on new clients – this is most appropriate when dealing with business to business services, but also dealing with individual clients who will have to pay for services as they go. A simple credit check with their permission will give you an idea if they have a history of delinquent payment history

2. Offer many popular deposit options – the more convenient you make it for your clients to pay for the services you offer, the more likely it will be that they’ll pay you promptly. Offer payment by check, credit card, debit cards, and remote deposit options for payment.

3. Set short payment terms – make clients pay within 30 days otherwise interest can be accrued. Ask for payment at the time of invoicing, and set a due date within 30 days from that date if they can’t pay on the spot

4. Don’t be a pushover – once you start letting late payments slide without word of warning of a follow up, clients will believe that it’s okay. If your clients don’t pay for services rendered within the terms set, don’t keep chasing them ineffectively, use a collections agency to get what’s due to you. In certain industries, like senior home care, you might be tempted to extend payment to those who can’t pay their bill, but while some level of compassion for clients’ and their financial situation is okay, remember you’re operating a business

Chasing clients for payment is a pretty unenjoyable part of the job of a franchise owner, but remember, every client who doesn’t pay can directly affect your fiscal success, and for every time you make an exception, another delinquent payment is likely to occur as a result.  Be professional, be compassionate, but at the end of the day, make sure you get the money you’re owed.

What You Need to Start a Home Care Business

There’s a lot involved with starting any business, and it’s for that reason that working with a franchise can be even more beneficial. A Franchiser can help to iron out all of the legalities and generally, make sure you have all your ducks in a row during the start-up process and on an ongoing basis. Otherwise, should you miss a step along the way it could greatly compromise the success of your business as you might be left with fines, legal issues, or even find yourself forced to cease operations before you’ve really had a chance to get started.

If you’re thinking about starting a home care business, whether on your own, or with a franchise, you will need everything outlined below. Of course, if you’re making your investment through a franchise, the parent company should be in a position to make arrangements for you and walk you through most steps in the process.

1. Financing – sometimes a franchise already has arrangements with a preferred lender to fund the start-up costs that franchisees are responsible for covering. Otherwise, you will need to secure a loan in order to make your initial investment when purchasing a franchise. Of course, if you decide to go with an independent start-up, rather than a franchise, you’ll be on your own completely and it can be more difficult to get a loan without a major franchise name behind it.

2. Building Organization – if you are building a new home base for a home care business, you will need contractors, permits and more. If you plan on taking an existing building to turn into your office for your home care business, many of these elements will still apply. A franchisor may direct you towards their preferred vendors and give you better rates for any changes and renovations that need to be made to a building.

3. PR and Marketing Plan – to start a successful home care business, you need clients! Before you begin, think about your PR and marketing plan. Again, a franchisor parent company can provide guidance on all elements, and if you want to do anything out of the box, you may need to present them with a plan for approval.

Leadership for Successful Franchise (cont’d)

Our post continues from Friday, October 9, 2009. In order to create a pleasant work environment and set the stage for the longevity of your company, hone up on your leadership skills so you’re at your best.

3.  Place people in the right jobs – everyone has bad days, but at the same time, everyone has different skills and interests. Make sure that you have people in jobs that they’re well-suited for. You might have a responsible and reliable member of your team who is great with paperwork and behind the scenes activity for the company, but don’t expect that they’ll be just as proficient if they are assigned a position as a receptionist. Pay attention to your employees’ strengths and interests, and don’t be afraid to try them out in different roles that you think they might be suited for. You just need to be prepared to be wrong and correct any mistakes before the company is affected.

4. Recognize leadership skills – you can’t run a business without support, so recognize leadership qualities in your employees and don’t be afraid to delegate and teach them the tools of the trade. However, don’t expect that they’ll do everything your way – a good leader can be creative in their methods, and the important thing that the end result and goal is the same regardless of the road they take to get there.

5. Never stop learning – you own a franchise, congratulations. Now, don’t expect that it means you’re an expert in leadership. A good leader never stops learning. Read books on leadership, take seminars and make sure that your development never stops.

Leadership for a Successful Franchise Business

Successful Franchise Business

If you’re planning to be a franchise owner, you can’t expect success from your company or motivation from your employees if you don’t lead by example. In order to create a pleasant work environment and set the stage for the longevity of your company, hone up on your leadership skills so you’re at your best.

1. Learn how to motivate your staff – come up with incentives to keep your staff motivated to deliver the best efforts they can. Sometimes a paycheck and good boss isn’t enough. Everyone is motivated in different ways, so get to know your employees and what makes them tick. For some, simple recognition for a job well done may be enough to keep them going, for others, physical incentives for specific goals met will keep staff on top of their game. Sure, good employees will do a good job; but remember, for the success of your business, a GOOD job isn’t always enough. Go the extra mile in order to get great.

2. Get to know employees personally –there’s a fine line between being a boss and being a friend that must be maintained and recognized at all times. However, that doesn’t mean you can’t connect on a more personal. Employees who know you more intimately, and know that you look at them as people and not just staff will naturally want to do a better job in the workplace because they don’t want to do you wrong. Know how many children your employees have at home, and ask about them on occasion; remember someone’s favorite food or drink and make sure it’s on hand at a staff lunch; and bring up mutual topics of interests like hobbies and favorite sports. It’s not hard to make an effort, and you’ll find that the workplace is a more enjoyable place to be as a boss as well.
